The Best Hawaiian Coffee

Coffee was planted in Hawaii as early as 1813, as recorded in a journal by Don Francisco de Paula y Marin. Unfortunately, no one knows what became of the seeds he planted, and it took several more years for Hawaiian coffee growing to become established. Coffee was introduced to the Kona region, which is famous for its coffee production, by Reverend Samuel Ruggles in 1828. The Kona coffee belt now makes up a two-mile strip that runs from around 700 feet in elevation to 2,000 feet.

Although there are many brands of Hawaiian coffees, Kona coffee is the most popular and best Hawaiian coffee on the market. Don’t confuse “Kona blends” with pure Kona coffee, though. These blends are only required by law to contain 10% real Kona coffee. Also, be aware that just because a coffee is produced by a Hawaiian coffee company does not mean it is Kona coffee. If it is pure Kona coffee, it will be labeled as such.

Why Kona Coffee Is the Best

There are many factors that put Hawaiian Kona coffee ahead of other coffees. The first is that the climate on the island, with its morning sunshine and afternoon rains, is ideally suited to the production of good coffee. More importantly, because Hawaiian coffee growers are proud to be the producers of the best coffees in the world, they do everything possible to maintain the high standards that Hawaiian coffees are known for.

Grades of Hawaiian Coffee

Unlike other places where coffee beans are machine harvested, Kona coffee beans are hand-picked. After they are harvested, these Hawaiian coffee beans are sorted and graded according to size, moisture content, and other criteria. The coffee beans then progress through various stages of production before reaching the market. Kona coffee is mountain-grown at high elevations and allowed to ripen naturally.

The highest quality of Kona coffee as established by the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture is Peaberry, which is a dark roast coffee with robust flavor. Extra fancy and fancy are next, and are served by highly-rated hotels, restaurants, and resorts. These are both medium dark roast coffees made from large beans with mild flavor. Kona Grove No. 1 and Emporium are medium roast Kona Hawaiian coffees that are sold in grocery stores and tourist shops.

The Flavor of Hawaiian Coffee

Hawaiian coffee has a unique flavor that makes it different from all other kinds. It is mild but very aromatic. It is not bitter and does not leave any unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth. It has a very clean taste. This is what has endeared this coffee to so many discriminating coffee drinkers.

Remember, you can always save money by buying bulk coffee beans, but be careful, coffee does lose it’s freshness.
